This song has a way to really get into my head. I’ve had the soundtrack for “The Future is Unwritten” in the cd player of my car for the past week or so and it’s just a great little tune. When I have time I’m going to find more from Tim Hardin, it’s been too long since I’ve discovered new music, something I just haven’t concentrated on lately though something I love to do. Leave it to Joe Strummer to reawaken it in me.

During my lay off from college, I did not work, I did not want to put any roots down, because I had seen others do such a thing. They would say they were going to work to save up money before they left town and they never left. They would spend their money rather than save and most times also drive themselves into debt, leaving themselves stuck. I did not want that to happen to me. This makes complete sense to myself but few others I have met understand why I never seriously looked for a job during this time, not that jobs were plentiful anyway.
So during this time I expanded my literacy of music. I listened to music for 8-10 hours a day, I read about music, I began to learn to play music, and I began to dabble in recording and producing music. At the time I was not sure how this was going to be my way to make a better way for myself but it was something that interested me greatly and kept my mind occupied.
Over the next 5 years I continued to struggle with finding my way out of where I was and to continue my education. I did not know if I would ever go back to college. There was a bit of a bad taste in my mouth from my first experience. A part of me was looking less for finding a way to improve myself and more of just trying to find a way out of the town. I just wanted to take my guitar and go off to play some punk rock and live on the road, scraping by the best I could, it would be rough but it’d be an adventure. For a time I was also considering going to a trade school and being a union worker in some trade, but I mostly considered doing that for the chance of being involved in strikes and fighting for workers rights, looking at the current political climate I certainly would have had the chance but unions also may lose even more of their power.
In the summer of 2005 I had decided I needed to do something to kick myself into gear. I began to look into going back to college, I knew that my plans of going on the road to play music would not work out very well, mainly because I didn’t know anyone else who listened to the same kind of music as me let alone played it. I was looking at culinary schools, political science programs and a few psychology programs. I never really thought about going back to MTU but I decided to look at their psychology program one day and happened to see a link about their new degree programs being offered so I clicked on it. This is where I found out that MTU was starting degrees in Audio Production and Sound Design, this really piqued my interests. I decided to email the advisor to find out if I could enroll, from there I set up a meeting with him. We discussed my interest in music and decided that I could join the program, in hindsight I think that I was accepted just to be a body in a new program but maybe that’s just me being cynical. This all happened in August and I got my financial aid sorted out and started college (again) a few weeks later. During the first week of classes some guys from a traveling theater show gave a little presentation/talk to the students, in which they talked about how little money there was and how hard it can be to make it (in the theater industry). With this all fresh in my mind I dropped out of college. Again.
After about a week of being back out of school I began to realize that I had made a mistake. I began to think about going back and to continue in the Sound Design program, I did not want to be in the theater industry anyway I wanted to be in the music industry. I spent the time I would have been in school practicing recording and playing music. I started taking classes again in the fall of 2006. I decided to take classes that interested me as well as the classes for my major, so that I would not drop out again. I found something that interested me and I worked toward my Sound Design degree while taking classes from the Humanities department that also interested me. The Sound Design program was a bit geared towards theater work which lessened my interest in everything and I was not great at theater stuff. I had found ways to work with music stuff, I befriended a local band and worked with them. I wanted to start a record label and recording studio to help small bands after I graduated, but eventually I realized that did not have the monetary means to start anything.
I had a friend who was a masters student in the Humanities department and the stuff he was doing with popular culture and that really interested me. I also realized that I would be graduating with a lot of extra credits so I started thinking about putting those to use somehow also. I decided that I was going to go to graduate school for something and I found out it would only take me three extra semesters to obtain a second bachelors degree, in Scientific and Technical Communication. I decided to work towards getting into a graduate school in cultural studies.
Finding something that I was passionate about, music, has allowed me to do what I had set out to do, better myself and improve my chances to get out of where I came from. Though I might not still be working towards the future I was when started out it still means that I have found a way out. My literacies have grown and changed over time but all of them have combined to get me to where I am.

This is the first half of an assignment for my Reading and Writing class at Michigan Tech. The assignment is about tracing our literacies, to look at what has helped shape these literacies.

I was born on a native american reservation, which is generally a life sentence of poverty at best. The reservation I lived on for the majority of my life was not as destitute as some. We have electricity and indoor plumbing, we have a modern(ish) town. My tribe opened the first Indian casino though we do not reap the benefits of most other tribes that are in the gaming business. The county my reservation is located in consistently has the highest unemployment rate in Michigan, not an easy task, and it is known in the Upper Peninsula and beyond as an area where drugs are plentiful and there is rampant alcoholism.
This is what I grew up in and what, as a young person, you see for your future. The school did not tell us we could go beyond the town. Students were encouraged to take the welding classes because that was one of the main industries in the area until about 6 years ago. Underage drinking was ignored or joked about by teachers and faculty. This is the environment I was learning in, an environment that encouraged me to assimilate, not to try to better myself or my community. It was common to have someone tell you that you would never be able to leave or make a better life for yourself. I believed this for quite a while and started to accept that I would stay there and have the same kind of life as everyone else. But I would look around, I would see how much people complained about their jobs, the desperation they had and always had in the back of my mind, the hope my parents had that I would be able to do something more than they did. Towards the end of my senior year of high school I figured out that I would do something to make it out, not just for myself, but for anyone from my town or a similar area. I wanted to show people young and old that if you come from a town crippled with alcoholism, drug abuse, unemployment and a self defeating attitude, you can improve your lot in life.
But there was a problem, I didn’t know what I was going to do. I got accepted to Michigan Technological University and Northern Michigan University, despite my low GPA I finished high school with a 2.3 or somewhere around there and it was good enough to be the exact middle of my class (of 48 if I remember correctly). So I went to MTU the fall after my graduation, like you’re “supposed” to do, a college education is the key to success and all of that. The only thing was I had no idea what I was going to college for. I was enrolled as a general engineering student though I knew I did not want to be an engineer of any kind. I actually put undeclared in the major field of the application but I guess someone decided that I meant general engineering by that so I decided to give it a try since I had not other ideas about what I wanted to be.
The environment of the university was something that I was not prepared for and I do not mean inside the classroom. I can say upon reflection that MTU is different now than when I first attended in the fall of 2000. I was not prepared to be surrounded by people who came from radically different backgrounds than me. I did not feel like I belonged on the campus and in a few cases heard negative comments about economically disadvantaged people, which still happens today but it makes me angry instead of uncomfortable now and anger is a source of fuel for me. Combine this with my disinterest in engineering and I quickly decided to leave the university. After four long days of being a college student I decided to drop out, but before I could drop out at the time I had to go talk to the Dean of Students about why I was leaving. The talk with Dean Melton was easy but while waiting to speak to her I was bombarded by questions by the woman at the desk about why I would want to drop out. She did not seem to understand the idea that I did not want to be an engineer and practically insisted that I was “just home sick” even though I told her I still lived at home. Overall she was very condescending to me. Dean Melton on the other hand immediately accepted my reason that I did not want to be an engineer.
I had escaped the university but was still motivated to do something positive in my life. However being surrounded by the area I was fighting against did not prove to be the best environment to figure out my life, at least not quickly. I took a “career assessment test” to see what would be the best path for me to follow. The results told me that I was very intelligent and I could “succeed in any field I chose”, not what a directionless 19 year old was looking to hear. I took to reading books that piqued my interests, nonfiction books mostly about politics and American society or about popular music, to keep myself close to learning. I also began delving further into music.

To be continued…

There has been a large change in the way content is distributed and produced for the Internet. When the Internet first began the user generally had to rely on the content that was provided to them from others however with new advances we have reached a period of Web 2.0. Web 2.0 has many different definitions, to try to put it succinctly it is using the web as a platform. Whatever one is interested in the web has become a platform for them to further that interest. This new digital environment allows the users to generate their own content and have a level of interactivity with their Internet experience. This new ability to produce as well as consume media gives the user the ability to have a voice in the issues that are present in society.
One of the largest ways that media is produced and distributed by users is through digital video. There are numerous sites that allow the user to generate their own content and publish it online, but the largest and most well known of these sites is YouTube. YouTube was founded in 2005 and was purchased by Google in 2006. YouTube has grown immensely from the time of its creation getting an average of 2 billion views a day, with users uploading 24 hours of content per minute. This is a double-edged sword when using YouTube for distributing ones content, while there are many eyes to see it there is also a lot of other content for those eyes to view instead. YouTube gives the user the platform to put out their work but it will be up to the other users to decide if that work is worth their consumption.
Youtube allows the creator of content to tag videos with certain keywords. Tim O’Reilly talks about the usefulness of tagging in his article What Is Web 2.0, in it is discussed how tagging allows videos to be found in a more natural way for the consumer. The consumer can enter certain words that may not be in the title of the video but still find the content. This feature will allow my production to be found by viewers who may not be looking for exactly a video about indigenous people and immigration.
In the article Streams of Content, Limited Attention: The Flow of Information through Social Media Danah Boyd talks about how our minds seem to be attracted to the media which is the worst for our minds. This must be kept in mind when posting something not just to YouTube but also to the Internet in general. Users will not always be looking for something with an important message but that does not mean that important things should not be produced. With that in mind I created a digital production, which from the beginning I planned on posting to YouTube, about the volatile subject of immigration. There are thoughtful and meaningful arguments being made on YouTube and there needs to be more of those options for users to consume to improve the content diet of the users. As I have mentioned in my writing on this blog before I feel that there is a need to take advantage of the opportunities that the technologies of Web 2.0 better than we, as a society, have been. I am hoping that by actually producing a work that has a larger meaning than I will help contribute to the furthering of using Web 2.0 to its full potential.

For most of the people called the digital natives video games have been a part of our life since we were small children. I’ve had video games in my life for as long as I can remember from the Atari 2600 up to a Xbox 360 (currently not in my life, damn RROD). I agree with both Jenkins and Wright’s views of the video game experience and the roles that video games now play in our culture. The games we play shape our brains and our personalities to an extent. They force us to solve problems which we otherwise may never encounter. Most of us will never be in charge of a country but games like Civilization allows us to face the task of growing a society, of being diplomatic. Of course some, like me most of the time, may just decide to resort to war instead of diplomacy but that has gotten harder to do with the newer installments of the game, this is an example of a game that takes your actions into consideration for later.

Video games are becoming more and more works of art as Jenkins argued 10 years ago. Games are developing richer and deeper story lines, one could argue that the big time games have more depth of story than the big time movies currently do. I will say that I think Grand Theft Auto IV has a storyline with more depth and thought than the Transformers movies that have been giant hits at the box office. I have never finished GTA 4 but that has been due to time commitments I never finished the first Transformers movie because I could not stand it. Video games get a lot of bad press from people who have never sat down and used the technology or from people who don’t see how something “childish” can be art, people had argued the same thing about Rock n Roll music but there are few people today who would say that form of music offers the audience nothing. Video games will eventually gain wider acceptance as the art they are when those who are ingrained with them gain a larger voice in society.

The term Web 2.0 is used often but what does it actually mean? Well what it means depends on how you look at it. Danah Boyd sees Web 2.0 to be based on the idea of being in tune with information constantly. Always having that “flow” of information there and for a wider and constantly growing audience. This version of Web 2.0 is not without it’s problems. People enjoy the junk food of stimulation and while we are fighting the problem with physical obesity we may now be facing a psychological obesity problem; people consuming too much “junk information.”

Tim O’Reilly has a different view of what Web 2.0 means, he sees it as the movement towards web applications. He sees Web 2.0 as something that is based on services and how they are set up and presented to the public versus how it was done with “Web 1.0″. This puts the idea in the realm of being about the companies using the new technology to create services were there is no longer a need for the prepackaged software but more providing services to the user that appear to be of little cost to them. The Google (which seems to be the standard bearer of Web2.0) example is the best highlight of what he is trying to say, provide people with a servie where the important thing is not about buying your product but using it and getting the information of their usage to streamline the service better and in turn attract more users and repeat the cycle. Google presents itself as user friendly and gives itself the feel of a collective work rather than the work of a few, even if the collective work that is done is small it still gives some users the feeling that they have a level of input and say in the matter of developing new aspects of the technology. That seems to be a big part of this definition of Web 2.0, having a more community feel to the Web and the applications on it.

Another idea of what Web 2.0 means is presented by Henry Jenkins. His theory is that Web 2.0 is nothing more than a business model. The recent Facebook privacy outrage helps make his point, the companies that embrace the online community idea are really just there to gather information about the users to sell to the highest bidder while alos allowing the users to generate the content for them so they do not have to do any of the work as far as keeping the users coming back.

The main challenge I have faced is not about the technical side of the project but the research side. Putting together images and text and hopefully audio in iMovie is not extremely difficult. Looking through the vast amount of information about immigration is the hardest part for me, both from gathering information and being infuriated by some of it. Finding information that fit my original idea has been also difficult but the formulation for my video has adapted and changed throughout the process.

On the other hand the wealth of knowledge available to me gives me a lot to chose from for the video. There is no such thing as having too much information. I just have to find what applies to the idea I am trying to put forth the best.

The purpose of my project will be to create dialog about immigration. I will produce a short video on the subject which will attempt to allow for critical thinking and discussion on the topic.

The audience for this work will be first and foremost, my professor Wendy Anderson and my fellow classmates in HU 2642 Introduction to Digital Media. The secondary audience will be anyone who may come across the video on a site such as youtube should it be posted there.

The context will be fitting because the digital realm is filled with short videos, not always informative or dialog creating but filled none the less. There are plenty of people who make little videos to express the way they feel about a topic so another one will be right at home.

In Chapter s of Wysocki and Lynch’s book they cover different ways to get started with producing communication. The first thing they suggest one do is to composing for learning, or composing for yourself, brainstorming for example. Sitting down and cranking out ideas will hopefully lead you to a topic of both interest and substance. Once the idea is chosen then you can continue to work on your composition as one of learning until you feel that it is ready to be a composition for communicating.

When working on composing for communication it is important to develop ideas of who your audience will be, what context they will encounter your work, and pretty much how they feel about your work. If you do not look into these subjects before you start developing your composition you will probably not be able to effectively reach your audience. You need to understand who it is your talking to and what their want out of a composition of the style you are working on, what they think about the subject matter, etc. If one does not consider the audience or context of their communication they will likely have a failure to communicate.
